with Covid still active and new restrictions in place, we are choosing to do mini "photo reviews" for as many shows as we can this year

restrictions limit us to grabbing a few shots during the first 2 or 3 songs and then we need to be on our way

Kelowna pianist, harpist and singer/songwriter Dana Kowalsky gave a rare public concert at The Vibrant Vine that showcased a very high level of both musicianship and musicality. Kowalsky primarily performs at weddings and other private functions, but we are genuinely glad that she made this exception to play a couple of full sets of her uniquely personalized versions of pop covers as well as her own compositions.

She started her first set at the piano, and played a full 10 songs there before switching to her harp. She plays exquisitely, but it is the combination of her voice with its pure quality and her touch on the keys that pulls you all the way in, instantly. Most beguiling.

She brings across to the harp, which she played 9 songs on, including a magical cover of Joni Mitchell's "River", the elevated sense of accompaniment and feel and lightness that she displayed so well on the piano. So complete is that trasference of her approach and conceptualization that you wonder why all pianists don't double on harp.

Kowalsky, on this afternoon, charmed this reviewer into staying much longer than intended during these Covid restricted times. I quite simply didn't want to go.
